Picture this; it’s your birthday. Your family has generously offered to take you and your entire brood out to dinner to celebrate. You sit at your favorite restaurant, it’s crowded, but perfect, you are surrounded by laughter and love…and then your three-nager clicks into overdrive. He collapses in a puddle on his chair and slithers onto the floor where he begins kicking and his wail slowly rises above the din of the other customers. Your night out, such a rare occurrence for many moms, is about to be ruined.
This is what happened to me last Thursday night. I was prepared to pick up my 3 year old and drag him to the car, scrapping my lovely night out and ducking my head in embarrassment. Miraculously, before I took the usual steps, I remembered that I had brought our tablet with a newly installed and enthusiastically received children’s app by Kidlodland. KidloLand is specifically geared towards kids under 5 years. Kids can learn ABCs, animals, fruits, vegetables, shapes and more with the help of 800+ interactive nursery rhymes, songs, stories and educational activities. This app HAD to help during this crisis!
As some of you know, I am not a huge fan of shoving technology at my children. There is a time and place for such endeavors. Let me tell you, this was one of them! I quickly snatched the tablet and launched the app. Thankfully this is not one of those programs that takes 5 minutes to load. My son immediately heard the telltale tinkle of KidloLand and took a breath, his eyes lit up and he became the excited little boy I love rather than the tiny demon who was trying to ruin the one night a year I don’t have to cook and do dishes.
For the next 30 minutes, my three-nager listened to nursery rhymes, created fruit out of puzzle pieces and fed his creations to silly monsters, he played games that taught him shapes and worked on phonics, connected dots….He was happy, engaged, and learning for 30 minutes so I could have a nice night with my parents and husband.
My 3 year old had already shown great interest in the app during the week before my birthday dinner. After Kidloland contacted me and offered me 6 months of free use of the app I immediately downloaded the program and searched through it’s many activities.
Lacking technological savvy I have been somewhat at a loss regarding what apps to allow my children to engage with. I did not want an app where they feel they are being taught all the time, they do enough learning at school. Nor do I want one that is only about silly games and rots their brains.
Kidloland is the best of both worlds. My children love listening to the many songs and nursery rhymes, singing along and having fun, they love putting together puzzles and feeding goofy monsters. My 3 year old loves popping bubbles on the screen; he giggles and has fun while I know that he is gaining fine motor skills and dexterity. My 5 year old, who is very smart but lacks conviction to learn his letter sounds, is entranced by the phonics songs and games and, in the two weeks he has had access to the program, has improved his phonics and begun sounding out words on his own. While KidloLand is an education app targeting 1-5 year olds, I must admit that my 7 and 9 year old have also found enjoyment in the many games and songs!
That’s the key isn’t it? Finding an app that presents learning in such a way that it IS, in fact, just a game. My children love learning new things, but as soon as the novelty starts to wear off and they realize it’s just learning, they tend to lose interest. But when learning is covertly cloaked in fun, children will seek it out daily. This is what my kids do with this app, they ask to play everyday…and I let them. They are having fun, they are learning, they are even working together to do so!
With 800+ Nursery Rhymes, Songs, Stories, Activities, and Games for Kids there is always a new activity to move onto. My children literally can’t get bored, there is just too much to do and learn!
I now use our KidloLand app as a reward for good behavior, little do they know that the extra chores they do for the opportunity to play the app are just the icing on the cake. I would have let them play anyway, both to see their excitement at completing a new activity and knowing that they are so engaged with a program that is making them stronger learners and smarter humans.
