My husband, over the last few months, has decided to go on a mattress finding journey of epic proportions.
After MUCH research, meaning INSANE amounts of it, he found the bed-in-a-box mattresses to be especially promising. These beds are delivered to you in a human sized box (don’t get any ideas) and, after careful unwrapping, expand into incredible mattresses!
There are many beds out there like this but my husband has chosen 5 that he wants to try. Luckily, each of these companies offers a trial period with a money back guarantee. I initially thought this was kind of dumb; why can’t you just sit on the bed and decide if you like it? However, I have quickly learned that itf you want sleep that is truly going to change your life, you really do need to try out the bed; see how it changes to your form and temperature over a few weeks and then make a decision.
My husband has kindly written up a fabulous review of our first bed-in-a-box encounter which will hopefully help you make some good sleep decisions in the future as well!
Ghostbed Mattress (By Nature’s Sleep): review by Jesse puga
Queen Price: $745.00 with $50 off coupon
Ghostbed ended up being the first bed we tried since it was so highly rated, had a great price relative to the other mattresses, and was providing 3 free Ghostpillows with our order. That was particularly awesome as the Ghostpillows have become quite a wonderful surprise and addition. The order process was extremely easy and straightforward; very similar to an Amazon order and perhaps even easier. We received an email confirmation after the order and another when the bed was shipped to us.
The bed arrived extremely quickly. I ordered the bed on a Monday and received it on Friday. Unbelievably fast. When you are anxious to try something new (especially after sleeping on the same cheap, full sized mattress for over a decade), it’s nice to have it show up so quickly.
We un-boxed the mattress on the ground since we still needed to acquire a queen sized box- spring/foundation and watched as the foam hybrid mattress expanded. I have to say, it was pretty cool to watch and somewhat satisfying. We immediately noticed the high quality feel of the cover and the support when we laid on it, even though the mattress can take up to 24 hours to completely expand.
So the first night was… pretty bad. However this is likely for several reasons. First of all, through this process my wife and I have come to learn that we prefer softer mattresses that provide a bit more hug and countering; basically that you can snuggle into. We were also trying to adjust to a new mattress after sleeping on crap for over 10 years. That being said, the mattress was too firm for us to settle into initially. This was likely due to the fact that it still needed to fully expand, was a firmer mattress to begin with, and was sitting on the floor. We both tossed and turned, and were sleepless much of the night. A bit distressing.
However, we soon acquired a boxspring/foundation and had the bed set up right, and sleep soon became much better. The Ghostbed softens up throughout the night and allows you to settle more into it as your own body heat activates the foam. I had my first full nights sleep in over a year!
After about 3 weeks my wife and I were sleeping pretty well, but we noticed several issues. Due to the lack of initial softness and hug on the top layer of the mattress, we were not receiving much pressure relief for our shoulders and lower back. Granted, both of us have relatively lean and muscular builds, with more ample posteriors and broader shoulders, but the firmness was getting to us a bit. However, my mother tried the bed for several nights while staying over and loved both the comfort and support of the bed.
We decided that the sleep trial was over after about 6 weeks and called for a return and refund. Nature’s Sleep/Ghostbed’s customer service is excellent, so Initially they offered us a topper for the bed to help with pressure relief, but I refused. I simply wanted to try out the next mattress. Then they offered to upgrade us to a whole new, top-of-the-line, all memory foam mattress from their Nature’s Sleep line. It was called the Emerald. This, I couldn’t refuse and turned out to be an amazing bed.

One last note:
After we tried out the Emerald mattress we went back to the Ghostbed while we waited for our Purple mattress to arrive (they are back ordered about 3 weeks). We changed it up a bit and put on our old 2.5” memory foam topper and I am happy to say the bed is incredibly comfortable now. Ghostbed’s support is amazing, and now with the added comfort, hug, and plushness of the topper, the bed has really become wonderful.
